Water for people and the environment

A basic right - Water is a basic right for humans and the environment and should not be polluted, traded for profit or removed from its natural environmental cycle if that removal degrades the environment.

Desalination - Reverse osmosis is not supported due to its chemical pollution. Distillation is preferred, preferably in conjunction with heat-generating facilities using cross-industry planning, with brine discharge environmentally designed and if into the sea only to the open ocean, not gulfs or bays.

Lower Lakes & Coorong - The River, Lakes and Coorong are a highly connected set of integrated waterways: lakes, river, tributaries, fresh, estuarine, saline, hyper saline, marine.  Short-term emergency responses that disconnect the system undermine this. An integrated, independently refereed, multi-disciplinary plan, both local and basin-wide, is needed for recovery and management of the Lower Lakes. Water should be released from upstream, with priority over other demands, if flow is inadequate. Local expertise should have due recognition and bio-remediation fully explored before any engineering solutions are attempted. Seasonal flow to the sea is the ultimate measure of management success.

Stormwater - This is the highest priority for water recycling but aquifers must be left naturally resilient, i.e. not polluted. Stormwater, whether from urban or rural runoff, should only be released into Gulf St Vincent if it is to support estuarine ecosystems. All wastewater should be recycled.

Coastal Waters - No stormwater or waste water should flow into gulfs or bays unless under environmentally-established conditions.

Murray-Darling - Environmental health, with the necessary water allocations, is the first priority so that the system and the economies it supports can survive. Sustainable economics and development will then flow from this secure base. A science-based Reserve-Bank style management authority is necessary with the power, funding and responsibility to ensure that the flows meet the needs of the system

Aims

A basic right - Develop a scientifically and environmentally-based water allocation plan for industry, farming, the community and the environment.

Desalination - Cease the funding for the desalination plant as soon as possible and divert them to recycling.

Lower Lakes & Coorong - Restore the natural freshwater flows between the ecosystems of the Lower Lakes and Coorong and facilitate flows from upstream to enable seasonal flow to the sea.

Stormwater - Urgently provide funding to complete the project to make recycled stormwater potable and direct this water into the mains system.

Coastal waters - Initiate a program to flows to the gulf, particularly of polluted water.

Murray-Darling - Establish an independent science-based management authority with the power to manage the Murray-Darling system, including catchment dams, bores and aquifers, and similar authorities for the Great Artesian Basin and smaller regions such as Eyre Peninsula.
