Uniting Australians

Darian Hiles launched the United Party (see media release) on 9 October 2009 as a public strategy to provide political opportunities for individuals and groups in two ways:

1.   Working with other candidates and community groups to contest the State and Federal elections in a federation format to address the current crisis in the water, heritage & development and health care, including planning for major hospitals, and form a conduit for community action through a management group of like-minded politicians and representatives of existing community groups.

This became a collection of fiercely independent but mutually-supportive groups known as the Community Voice Coalition, chaired by David Winderlich with contact through the individual groups:

Independent David Winderlich MLC

United Party - Water, Housing, Healthcare

Save the RAH

Dignity for Disability (d4d)

St Clair Reserve Ratepayers and Residents Association

Community Health And Open Space

Save Glenside

Save Our Suburbs

2.   As individual specialist groups cannot cover all issues of public interest, the United Party, with an agreed set of platforms that all of its own members can relate to, was formed to present broad, consolidated options for the public. This allows its individual members to focus on their own areas while still being a part of a general public strategy.

This 2-part strategy allows the public to choose either a special-interest candidate or a member of a party that addresses that issue within the context of other public issues such as education, health, water, housing, etc. It also provides an avenue for special-interest groups to become a part of a mainstream party if they wish, and other Parties such as Save RAH and d4d have also joined.

Other coalitions followed.
