Poll "Make Abbott PM": wrong interpretation

The poll "Make Abbott PM" was a wrong interpretation of the data, as it did not take into account the most likely option, i.e. to let the elected members make the decision.

Minor parties and Independents first

Congratulations to the people of Australia for the historic break of the 2-party stranglehold of Australian politics. The United Party, with the slogan of Parliament is Us, has been lobbying the public to vote for minor parties and Independents because of the failure of the two main parties. Recent examples: Water (Guardian Weekly, 6/8/10), Broadband (The Australian, 12/8/10) and voting for minors and Independents first (The Advertiser, 21/8/10).

Multi-Party Government Needed

19 August 2010: Multi-Party Government neededAustralia's two-party system is obsolete and not in line with the rest of the world. This election it needs to catch up.

Bringing democracy to Federal Parliament

Today parliament does not belong to the people, it belongs to the majority party. The United Party is not contesting the Federal election and so is in an unbiased position to develop a strategy of collaboration between the non-major parties and Independents so that they form a stronger third-party voice and evolve toward holding the balance of power in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Water trading is the problem

Letter to the Guardian Weekly: The current lack of water in the Loweer Lakes of the MDB is caused by the government's water trading practices, not the drought.

Murray-Darling Basin Submission

The United Party has submitted a response to the Federal Water (Crisis Powers and Floodwater Diversion) Bill 2010. The main points include the need for the recognition of wider issues in the Murray-Darling Basin and a clearer focus on the central point, which is adequate fresh water in the Lower Lakes. For other submissions, see the listing of submissions.

Elected member ignored

A fundamental fault in Australia's political system has been shown up in Adelaide, where the elected State member is not from the governing party and therefore is completely ignored with regard to major public decisions. See the Media Release for details.

25 June 2010: The Prime Minister is not elected

"I was elected by the people of Australia as the Prime Minister of Australia", "the people of Australia ... elected me as Prime Minister" is false. As everyone knows, there is no Prime Ministerial box to tick on the ballot papers. Kevin Rudd was elected by the Labor Party caucus as its leader and potential Prime Minister but the voters had no say in this. See the media release.

Federal Election

The United Party is preparing for the Federal election, pending the announcement of the date. The theme is uniting the three areas of community, the economy and the environment.

Election results

11 seats were available in the Legislative Council. 74 candidates contested and it was generally anticipated that 8 seats would go to Labor and Liberal and 2 to the Greens and Family First, leaving one for the remaining 64. The United Party was not successful but given its recent creation and the short campaign, the achievement of about 1700 primary votes and over 7000 secondary was considered very respectable and we are pleased with the result - a good start for the launch of the party.

Move motorsport to the Port

The United Party supports the proposal of the Adelaide Motorplex group to buy land in Adelaide's northwest from the Government and build a permanant motor sports park, including moving Clipsal to it. They claim that the Government is refusing to sell the land to them, which means that Clipsal stays in the Parklands. Other states have such facilities, such as in Perth. This will also protect the Parklands as the world-class dedicated park that everyone loves.

Paul Collier dies

Paul Collier dies but his spirit lives on

Paul Collier, d4d Party and the United Party's first preference, has died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage. At the announcement today at the Sebel Palyford his party said that his name on the ballot paper is already registered in the Electoral Commission and the party will continue with their second candidate, Kelly Vincent, in his place.

Similarly, his name is now established on the United Party's voting ticket and this arrangement will remain, with preferences flowing directly to Kelly.

SA Archives saved

Public outcry successful!

Following a widspread public outcry, the Federal Government has reversed its decision to close the National Archives Office in Adelaide. It said it would move the office to "co-locate with similar institutions" within SA. Now it needs to ensure that valuable staff are not lost and that acess by the public is enhanced in the process.
